History of the Oranmore Lodge

The Oranmore Lodge Hotel - Formerly "Thornpark House". The hotel was originally the ancestral home of the Blake-Butler family who lived here from the 1870s to the turn of the century. The house is now owned by the O'Higgins family. The original house has three different architectural styles: Gothic, Georgian and Victorian. The exquisite decorative plasterwork throughout the original house was executed by the same Italian craftsmen who were responsible for many of the elegant period homes throughout Ireland during this period. "Thornpark House" comprise of six master bedrooms, four guest rooms, servant quarters and stables. It was a frequent rendez-vous for Ireland's nobility when visiting the area with the famous Galway Blazer Hunt.

Thornpark House was converted to a hotel in the early '60s. It was purchased by hoteliers Brian and Mary O'Higgins in 1984. It has gone through extensive refurbishment and extensions which comprise of 60 rooms and luxury suites, 60 seater restaurant, conference facilities for 250 and a fully equipped leisure centre. During these developments one of the over-riding concerns was that none of the original characteristics of the house would be lost. This characteristic is carried through to the spacious, but homely lounge bar and of course, the pride of Brian O'Higgins, the original dining room with its Adam fireplace as a gracious focal point.

The 19th century gracious living and the 21st century conveniences have been elegantly united in order that guests visiting the hotel can experience the splendor of times past whilst enjoying the comforts of the 21st century. This gracious old world house has it's own coat of arms at the entrance to the hotel "comme je trouve" (as I find) thereby epitomising the best of traditions of Irish hospitality. Like many of the great houses of Ireland, it is reputed to be haunted!! However, few people can agree when, or, what 'spirit' frequents the house! The most enjoyable spirits can be found in the bar where we look forward to meeting you. Lunch is served daily from 12.30pm - 2.30pm and Bar Food from 2.30pm - 9pm each evening - guaranteed to satisfy any appetite.
