Our Story
Oranmore Lodge Hotel
Nestled in the charming village of Oranmore, Oranmore Lodge Hotel has roots stretching back to the early 19th century.
The building, originally known as Mount Vernon Cottage, was transformed in the late 1800s into the family residence Thornpark – with distinctive gables, bay windows, and the traditional Blake–Butler coat of arms still adorning its façade.
It was lovingly converted into a hotel in the early 1960s and has been carefully expanded and modernised by the O’Higgins family since they took ownership in 1984.
With over 150 years of warm Irish hospitality, we’ve become a trusted haven for guests, offering that special blend of history, personal service, and a “home away from home” ambiance.

The story of Oranmore Lodge Hotel begins in the early 19th century, when Mount Vernon Cottage was first constructed.
Surrounded by the beauty of Galway Bay and the village of Oranmore, the residence became a symbol of refined country living, blending charm and character that would endure for generations.
Thornpark Residence
Timeline – Late 1800s
By the late 1800s, the home had been transformed into the family residence known as Thornpark.
With its striking gables, elegant bay windows, and the Blake–Butler coat of arms proudly displayed on its façade, the building reflected the status and heritage of the families who lived there.
From Family Home to Hotel
Timeline – 1960s
As Oranmore grew and Galway became a popular destination, the house was converted into a hotel in the early 1960s.
This marked the beginning of a new era, opening its doors to visitors from near and far and laying the foundation for its future as a hub of hospitality.
O’Higgins Family Ownership

A new chapter began when the O’Higgins family took ownership in 1984.
With a passion for warm Irish hospitality, they expanded and modernised the hotel while carefully preserving its character and history.
Their dedication has ensured the Lodge remains both a landmark and a beloved destination.
